Harpsichord's jack

-Harpsichord's jack-

In the jack of harpsichord, a plectrum juts out almost horizontally and It passes under the thin metal string.

Historically, plectra were made of bird quill or leather, and feather, but many modern harpsichords have plastic plectra.

When musician presses the front of keyboard, the back of the keyboard rises, and the jack is lifted, and plectrum plucks the string.

Also, The vertical motion of the jack is then stopped by the jackrail, which is covered with soft felt to muffle the impact.

Plectra : plural of plectrum (Lat : plēctrum / plēctra ; Greek: πλήκτρο (pliktro) / πλήκτρα (pliktra) ; German: Das Plektron or Das Plektrum / Die Plektra)
